Scary Bear

Scary Bear was a bear.

He was a bear with fuzzy hair,

Fuzzy hair he like to share,

Like to share his fuzzy hair,

With hairless people everywhere.

Then balding men came from far and near,

To give that bear a great big cheer,

And to thank this creature called Scary Bear,

Who gave to them all his hair.

Then Scary Bear came on out,

And all the men just looked about,

They all were silent as down he sat.

They all were wondering why he had a name like that.

Scary Bear isn’t the kind of bear,

One would find in a strange nightmare.

The name Scary Bear,

Just isn’t fair,

Cause Scary Bear likes to share,

Like to share his fuzzy hair,

With hairless people everywhere.

Then the balding men changed his name,

To something they thought was a little more tame.

Shary Bear, they called him then,

And they all clapped—yes, all the men.

Now Shary Bear is still a bear,

He’s still a bear with fuzzy hair,

Fuzzy hair he likes to share,

Likes to share his fuzzy hair,

With hairless people everywhere.

It didn’t matter that they changed his name.

To him the names were all the same.

But he wanted them to remember his caring.

And he wanted them to remember his sharing.

It doesn’t matter what they may call you,

It’s what you do they’ll recall when life is through.

Sharing

Have you ever given something that was very important to you to someone else? Sometimes it’s hard to share, but there is a joy and a fun in sharing with others that can only be understood by someone who has done it.

Listen to what the Bible says in 1 John 3:18, “My little children, let’s not love in word only, neither with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.” In other words, don’t just talk about doing good, actually do it.

Possible or Impossible?

You Will Need:

GET STARTED

Try to figure this out:

How can one piece of paper hold up an entire book?

Try this experiment to find out how:

Take one piece of regular paper. Roll it up to look like a toilet paper or paper towel tube. Then use a piece of tape to hold the roll in place. Set it on a flat surface so that it stands up tall. Then carefully place the book on top of it.

SAY—The paper did something you might have thought was impossible at first. But just remember that with God all things are possible and the Lord will never call you to do anything that He will not also give you the strength you need to do it.

Read Philippians 4:13 from your Bible.

PRAY—That your kids will always follow Jesus and trust Him for everything they’ll ever need in life.

BREAKFAST BITES

ASK—If you had all power and you could do anything, what would you do? (Fly? Have a million dollars? Run faster than a bullet? Jump over tall buildings?)

ASK—If God could do anything with your life, what do you think He might do? (Use you to tell others about Him, call you to be a minister or missionary, let you go to another country to share Jesus, etc.)

KEY THOUGHT: There is no limit to the incredible things God can do through you if you follow Him and let Him work in your life in any way He wants.

Empowering

Read

On New Year’s Day, 1929, Georgia Tech played UCLA in the Rose Bowl. In that game, a man named Roy Riggles recovered a fumble for UCLA. Somehow Riggles became confused and started running 65 yards in the wrong direction. One of his own teammates finally outdistanced him and tackled him just before he scored for the opposing team. When UCLA attempted to punt, Tech blocked the kick and scored a safety, which was the ultimate margin of victory.

That strange play came in the first half, and everyone watching the game was asking the same question, “What will the coach do with Riggles in the second half?” The players filed off the field and went into the locker room and sat down on the benches and the floor—all but Riggles. He put a towel around his shoulders, sat down and put his face in his hands.

A coach usually has a great deal to say to his team during halftime, but that day Coach Price was quiet. No doubt he was trying to decide what to do with Riggles. Then the timekeeper came in and announced that there were only three minutes left till playtime. Price looked at the team and said simply, “Men, the same team that played the first half will start the second.”

The players got up and started out—all but Riggles. He didn’t budge. The coach looked back and called to him again. Still he didn’t move. Coach Price went over to where Riggles sat and said, “Roy, didn’t you hear me? The same team that played the first half will start the second.” Then Riggles looked up and said, “Coach, I can’t do it to save my life. I’ve ruined you. I’ve ruined the University of California. I’ve ruined myself. I couldn’t face that crowd in the stadium to save my life.”

The Coach said, “Riggles, get up and go on back. The game is only half over.” And Roy Riggles went back, and those Georgia Tech players will tell you that they never saw a man play football like Roy Riggles played in that second half.1

Reflect

Worry is a heavy load, but a kind word cheers you. (Proverbs 12:25 NCV)

Ephesians 4:11-12—“And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ.”

“If you want one year of prosperity, grow grain. If you want ten years of prosperity, grow trees. If you want one hundred years of prosperity, grow people.” 2

Respond

Empowering students for ministry opportunities many times begins with smiles and simple words of encouragement (i.e., You’re special; God has great plans for your life; God made you for a special reason, etc.) How have you encouraged your
students this past week? How has the Lord encouraged you? In what areas of your life do you feel you need encouragement?

Your thoughts?

A Fly in My Eye

What’s that I hear.

It sounds like a fly.

Whatever it is—

It’s now in my eye!

Hop. Hop.

It’s a grasshopper, I think.

Plop. Splash. What’s this?

Now he’s in my drink!

Whoa! Look out!

A bumblebee’s flying near.

Huzz, buzz. What’s that?

I think he’s in my ear!

Is the fly in your eye,

Making it hard to blink?

Is there a bee in your ear,

And a hopper in your drink?

These things don’t belong.

Don’t you see?

That they shouldn’t be there,

Is obvious to me.

Do pigs belong in the sky?

Should a cow live in your den?

Does spinach belong in a pie?

Should a Christian’s life have sin?

Sin will never ever belong,

So do what right—not what’s wrong.

Righteousness

Someone who is righteous lives the way God wants them to live. They live in a right way doing right things in a right relationship with God. But we all make mistakes. Sometimes they are accidents, but sometimes we do wrong things on purpose. If you do something wrong, listen to what the Bible says in 1 John 1:9 about what you should do, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Walking in Darkness

You Will Need:

GET STARTED

Take turns blindfolding each member of the family to see if they can walk from one end of the house to the other without touching anything. The second time you do this, let each person have a guide to help him.

ASK—Which was easier—having a guide or not having a guide?

SAY—Did you know that Christians—those who have given their lives to Jesus—become guides for those who don’t know Christ, to lead others to Him.

Read 2 Corinthians 4:4 from your Bible.

SAY—The Bible says that those who don’t know Jesus are blind to the things of God. That’s the reason they need someone to show them the way to Christ so He can bring His light and love into their lives.

Read Acts 16:16-34 from your Bible.

ASK—How did Paul and Silas get the chance to share Jesus with the jailer?  (Through several bad things that happened, including being beaten and put in jail. God will always give you the strength to live for Him.)

KEY—God can even use the bad things that happen to you to give you the chance to show His light and love to others.

PRAY—That God will use every member of your family to be a guide to lead others to Jesus.

BREAKFAST BITES

ASK—What can you do to make God stop loving you?  (Nothing.)

ASK—Once you’ve given your life to Jesus, what can separate you from the love of Christ?  (Nothing—not even you.)

Coaching

Read

One of the most significant battles in the world history was between the forces of the Duke of Wellington and the armies of Napoleon Bonaparte. The people of Great Britain were waiting with baited breath to find out who won the battle of Waterloo, because whoever won the battle would decide the future of Europe. They did not have telegraph or telephone or radio or television in those days. The news of the battle came to England by sailing vessel to the south coast and then was delivered over land by semaphore. Semaphore was a system for signaling by using flags or arms in various positions, flashed from town to town until it reached the top of Winchester Cathedral and on to London.

The populace eagerly waited as the semaphore signals spelled out the words, “Wellington Defeated.” Just then a dense fog settled down over the harbor as this incomplete message was waved on to London. Discouragement settled over the land. Streets were barricaded. Women and the elderly prepared to defend their country in the streets and fields.

Finally the fog lifted and the signals came through again to complete the message, “Wellington Defeated the Enemy.” Can you imagine the wild delirium of joy that spread like fire throughout all of London? Just like the fog covered up the incomplete message we, as teachers, get fogged in occasionally and are robbed of a complete message.1

Reflect

Proverbs 13:17— “An unreliable messenger stumbles into trouble, but a reliable messenger brings healing.” (NLT)

Hebrews 10:24—“And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds.”

Respond

The purpose of a “coach” is to move a person from where they are to where they want to be. That was the purpose of a “stagecoach” in the old days. That’s why some people fly in “coach” today. That’s also the reason sports teams hire a coach—To move them to where they want and need to go. As you “coach” the students in your ministry, be careful that your message doesn’t get fogged. Always be clear with your love, your message, and the way you live your life. Has anything been “fogging up” your message to the children in your class? Has anything come into your life that has fogged up your own communication with God?
